Choose healthy foods for your child

Mothers often worry about their children’s eating habits, as there is at least one child in every family who suffers from an eating disorder or moodiness when it comes to healthy food choices.

Doctors advise initially providing a variety of foods that children prefer or love, such as breakfast cereals, milk, and fortified orange juice with important nutrients such as vitamin D and calcium, before resorting to nutritional supplements. Children do not need large amounts of vitamins and minerals, but they can get enough of them from healthy meals that the mother prepares at home.

However, doctors will sometimes give a child a multivitamin if he or she has an eating disorder, follows a vegetarian diet, is diagnosed with slow growth, or does not eat regular or balanced meals on a regular basis. These nutritional supplements and vitamins are a good idea for children with chronic diseases or food allergies.

It is recommended to consult a doctor before giving the child any type of vitamins or nutritional supplements. Some medications may interact with nutritional supplements if the child takes them at the same time. In addition, large doses of vitamins and minerals, even healthy ones, can be toxic.
