Oats protect against cancer and heart disease

Scientists say there is growing evidence that oats can protect against cancer and heart disease, in addition to being a great source of food and energy.

Oatmeal is considered the favorite breakfast for many athletes and those who are tired of dieting, because they find high levels of fiber in it that give them energy for a longer period. But a recent medical study indicated that there is increasing evidence that the vital activity provided by oats may possess antioxidant properties that help protect against cancer and heart problems.

Scientists said at the annual conference of the American Chemical Society in Dallas, Texas, that a compound called avenanthramide can prevent the formation of fats in the arteries that cause heart attacks and strokes. Dr Shing Min Sang, from North Carolina Agricultural University, said: “The new study helped us discover that the active compounds in oats may provide heart-protective benefits.”

Researchers believe that the active compounds in oats would stop the formation of fat in the arteries, thus preventing atherosclerosis.

The study indicated that children who depend on oatmeal for their breakfast are also less likely to develop obesity. Oats also contribute to lowering blood pressure, which is closely linked to stroke and heart disease
