When you regularly heat your hair with curling irons, hot rollers, flat irons, or hair dryers, you can do a lot of damage to your hair. Using a heat protectant or hair spray will coat your hair so the heat burns away its moisture rather than your hair’s natural moisture. You can buy hair protection spray at the store, but by making it at home, you can control its contents and save some money. Best of all, you may already have several ingredients on hand.
6 ounces (177 ml) distilled water
24 to 36 drops of avocado oil
1 tablespoon (13 g) melted coconut oil
1-2 teaspoons (5-10 g) of hair conditioner
1 cup (237 ml) of distilled water
4 drops of almond oil
1 teaspoon (4.5 g) fractionated coconut oil
1 tablespoon (15 ml) sweet almond oil
2 teaspoons (10 g) of hair conditioner
1 cup (237 ml) of distilled water
5 drops of sage essential oil
5 drops of geranium essential oil
Pour water into a spray bottle. You can mix your hair protectant spray into the bottle you intend to keep it in. Start by filling the bottle with 6 ounces (177 ml) of distilled or filtered water. Since water is denser than oil, it is important to add it first so that they mix well.
You can use a plastic or glass spray bottle, but make sure it holds 7 ounces (207 ml) or more.
Add avocado oil. Once you have added the water to the bottle, mix in 24 to 36 drops of avocado oil. Add more oil if your hair is thick and coarse, and less oil if you have fine or thinning hair.
The oil-to-water ratio for spraying is 4 to 6 drops per ounce (30 ml) of water. You can adjust the recipe to make as much or as little protection spray as you need.
You can replace avocado oil with other oils. Sunflower, argan, and macadamia oils are other options to consider.
Shake the bottle to mix the ingredients. After adding the oil, shake the bottle vigorously to mix the water and oil. The spray may separate while it is being stored, so be sure to shake it well before each use.
Spray the mixture on your hair before styling it with heat. When you want to use a hair protection spray, gently apply it to your hair. Use your fingers or a comb to work the spray into your hair so you know all the strands are covered. Next, style your hair with your favorite heating tool, such as a curling iron, flat iron, or hair dryer, as usual.
You can use the spray on wet or dry hair.
Fill a spray bottle with water. Pour 1 cup (237 ml) of distilled water into a spray bottle. Make sure the bottle is large enough so that there is about 2 inches (5 cm) of space at the top of the bottle.
You can use a plastic or glass spray bottle for hair protection spray.
Add coconut oil and almond oil. Mix 1 tablespoon (13 g) of melted coconut oil and 4 drops of almond oil with water in the bottle. It is usually helpful to use a medicinal dropper to add the oils to the bottle.
You can substitute argan oil or grapeseed oil for almond oil if you prefer.
Mix a little hair conditioner. When the water and oils are mixed in the bottle, put a quarter of the amount of your favorite conditioner in the palm of your hand. Carefully transfer it to the bottle with the other ingredients.
You can use any conditioner you like, but make sure it contains silicones. They are the ingredients that help coat your hair to protect it.
Shake the bottle to mix all the ingredients. Once you have all the ingredients in the spray bottle, mix them together by shaking the bottle well. The spray may separate when stored, so remember to shake it before each use.
Don’t worry if the mixture has some suds or foam after shaking it all together. This is completely normal. The spray will settle into a milky liquid once it’s time
Apply the spray to your hair before using heat. When you’re ready to use the spray, hold the bottle 6 inches (15 cm) from your head and spray it evenly through your hair. Run the sprayer on your hair with your fingers, applying heating as usual.
Pour half of the water into a spray bottle. To mix a hair protectant spray, add ½ cup (118.5 ml) of distilled water to a spray bottle. Make sure the bottle can hold at least 10 ounces (296 ml) so there is room to add the rest of the ingredients.
Because hair protection spray contains essential oils, use a glass spray bottle to set it in. Essential oils can degrade more quickly in a plastic container.
Add all remaining ingredients. With half the water in the spray bottle, mix together 1 teaspoon (4.5 g) of fractionated coconut oil, 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of sweet almond oil, and 2 teaspoons (10 g) of hair conditioner. Next, add 5 drops of clary sage essential oil and 5 drops of geranium essential oil.
You can use whatever conditioner you normally use on your hair
Pour the mixture with the remaining water and shake well. With all other ingredients in the spray bottle, add the remaining 1/4 cup (118.5 ml) of distilled water. Shake the bottle well to mix all the ingredients.
Shake the hair protectant spray before each use in case the oils separate from the water
Spray your hair with the spray and work on it. To use this heat protectant, apply one spray to your hair. Use your fingers or a comb to comb through your tresses until all of your hair is covered. Style your hair with a curling iron, flat iron, or hair dryer as usual.
