Canola oil lowers blood sugar levels

A new study shows that switching to a diet low in simple sugars and rich in beneficial fats such as the types found in canola oil can help type 2 diabetes patients control their blood sugar levels.

Researchers found that type 2 diabetes patients who followed a low-sugar diet and took nutritional supplements containing an additional amount of canola oil had lower glucose levels and a significant decrease in their risk of heart disease, compared with patients who followed a diet rich in whole grains.

“We know that olive oil has a good reputation among doctors, but canola oil also has a good reputation,” research team leader Dr. David Jenkins of the University of Toronto told Reuters Health.

Canola oil is rich in alpha-linolenic acid, a type of omega-3 fatty acid that is also found in walnuts, as well as monounsaturated fatty acids that are also found in avocados and olives.
