Rod Stewart is taking home some serious hardware from this year’s American Music Awards.
Stewart’s adult children presented the “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” singer with the Lifetime Achievement Award, calling him by their affectionate nickname “Papa Stew.” The singer said he was “flabbergasted” to see five of his eight children together onstage.
Stewart then took to the stage to perform “Forever Young” accompanied by tapping backup dancers and Irish-step-dancing violinists. It was his first performance at the AMAs since 2004.
“When I started singing in the early 60s, well before all you of lot were here, the reason I got into it (was) because I had this burning ambition to sing,” Stewart said. “That’s all I wanted to do, I didn’t want to be rich or famous, and here I am, a few years later, picking up this wonderful award.”
Stewart’s Lifetime Achievement award bookends a multi-decade career in music with hits like “Maggie May,” “Hot Legs” and “Infatuation.” He’s a two-time inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He’ll embark on the North American leg of his “One Last Time” world tour this summer.
“Sir Rod Stewart is a master showman whose charisma and energy have defied time and embody the very spirit of rock and roll,” executive producers Barry Adelman and Alexi Mazareas said in an AMAs press release.
Janet Jackson also achieved a career-honoring award at this year’s AMAs. The “Rhythm Nation” singer was honored with the Icon Award and performed a medley of hit songs, including “Someone to Call My Lover.”
