Breast Cancer is now a big danger for men too

Prof. Dr. Sibel Özkan Gürdal said that the incidence of breast cancer in men has increased compared to previous years.

Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University (NKÜ) Faculty of Medicine Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Sibel Özkan Gürdal, in her statement to reporters at a meeting held in a cafe within the scope of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, stated that breast cancer is among the cancers that can be screened.

Stating that the chance of recovery for patients increases to 90 percent with early diagnosis, Gürdal said, “Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. This cancer can be prevented by every woman over the age of 40 having regular mammograms and breast self-examinations.”

Gürdal stated that the incidence of breast cancer in men has increased in recent years.

Explaining that women are more aware of breast cancer but men are not at the same level of awareness, Gürdal said, “There is a group that is less aware of breast cancer, men. Men do not think about the possibility of getting breast cancer at all. However, men can get breast cancer. Breast cancer is more common in men compared to previous years.”

Gürdal expressed that it is important for men to detect breast cancer in the early stages.

Emphasizing that early diagnosis and treatment of male breast cancer, as in all cancer cases, increases the possibility of recovery from the disease, Gürdal noted the following:

“Men don’t know that they could have breast cancer. When women feel a lump or cyst, they rush to the doctor because they are at risk of cancer. But when men feel a lump, they say ‘fatty lump, cyst’ and don’t think about the possibility of cancer at all. The rate of breast cancer in men is increasing. Men must have sufficient information about breast cancer awareness.”
