The envious and the miser
A miser and an envious stood before a king, and he said to them: “Ask for anything you want, and I will give the second twice what the first asked.” Neither of them wanted the other to take more than him, so they began quarreling for a long time, each asking the other to ask first. The king said: “If you do not do what I command you, I will cut off your heads.” The envious said to the king: “O my lord, gouge out one of my eyes!”
